About Us

Pattens have been trading since 1932, when they started up in Westcliff by Mr Evelyn Patten. In 1940 the business moved to Hadleigh where they stayed until a couple of years ago. At that time it was decided to shut the retail side of the business, as it was getting harder for the smaller shops to compete with the out of town centres, and concentrate on the Clock Repair business where the skill of the individual craftsman is important.

The business moved to a small workshop in Benfleet and is thriving there. Pattens is a 3rd generation family business and is run by myself and my wife, Rosemary, the original owner's grand-daughter .

I have been repairing clocks at Pattens since the late 1980's. I was admitted as a Freeman to the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1994 and received the Freedom of the City of London in 1996.

In 1998 I was made a Fellow of the British Horological Institute and in 2002 I was invited to become a Liveryman in the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers.

I repair for the trade as well as individuals who have just the one clock or a private collection.

My workshop is in Benfleet, Essex, UK., where I have facilities to manufacture many of the parts needed on the older clocks to return them to going order. For security purposes, personal visitors to the workshop are strictly by prior appointment only. I can normally collect and deliver your clock to your home or workplace.
